I'm fierce

This happened a long long time ago in a small Welsh village called Penmachno.

There lived a dangerous dragon, which scared the village people.

Finally the people decided to call a meeting to discuss what should be done to the dragon.

The meeting started and everyone was present.

The dangerous nature of the dragon was emphasised, because there were lots of children in the village.

The decision was unanimous: they would call a famous courageous knight who lived in the neighbouring Conwy castle to kill the dragon.

The knight arrived in a couple of days.

He was totally self-confident, and already on the way to the empty quarry, where the dragon lived.

The people gathered around the Rhiw Bach Quarry. They heard a scream.

The knight ran out of the quarry.

"You didn’t tell me about the size of the dragon!!!" the knight screamed going back to his castle.

It became dark and the night fell to Penmachno.

One of the dogs was missing. They would start to look for it in the morning.

Watch out little man

The first beams of the sun lit up the village. The search began. The village was so small that the dog would be found in an hour. However, he wasn’t found. The only place where they hadn’t looked for him was the place where the dragon lived.

No one would dare to go there.

Finally the owner of the dog dared to enter the quarry.

He came back crying with his dog’s bloody leg in his hand.

Most Welsh Dragons are Friendly The villagers were shocked.

They had a funeral for the dog. No one was allowed to go near the empty quarry. It was too dangerous. At night the mayor of the village went to the forest next to the quarry called Gwydyr Forest to watch if the dragon came out. He waited peacefully till the dragon stepped out. It had grown since he had last seen it.

The dragon was ten metres long and two metres wide. It had a metre long nails, it didn’t seem to have had a manicure for ages. It was dark green with pink stripes on its sides covered with scales. Anyway, it looked peaceful and friendly.

The mayor ventured to come near enough for the dragon to see him. "Hello", the dragon said in a low voice. The mayor was scared to death. "Well, hello, I mean, good evening", the mayor finally stammered.

The dragon burped. "You have got delicious pets", the dragon added. Although I have only eaten one recently, and even that one in a single bite without its leg. I had a bad feeling about that, but the taste was good", the dragon laughed and flames came out of its nostrils.

It started to make strange noises and lay down on its stomach.

It vomited. The dog came out bloody and howling. One of its legs was gone.

The thigh was left, and there was no bleeding any more. The mayor took the dog and ran to the vet of the village with it.

The mayor left the dog to the vet and went back to the forest to see the dragon.

The dragon was still there in the same place, so he found it quickly.

"You mustn’t eat the villagers or their pets! Promise me you won’t eat children!!" the mayor shouted.

The dragon sticked out his tongue at the mayor. "Why not?" he asked. The mayor lowered his voice "It just won’t do. Let’s make a deal that you won’t eat our people or animals. You’ll get as much food as you like, if only you don’t eat us!" "Hmm…that is tempting. Ok, it’s a deal."

The morning broke. Everyone was relieved, but still shocked, despite the fact that the dog was alive. There was a message to the people of the village. It was taken to the mayor.
It said:

Dear Mayor of Penmachno

Our villages have had arguments since the beginning of times. We are ready to fight. Your village belongs to us. Fight or leave and surrender.

Count Duccula

The mayor was terrified. The message was from the count of the neighbouring village. He got an idea.

"The dragon! It could defend our village", he thought and went to see the dragon. "Would you do like some fast food?" the mayor asked smiling. The dragon turned to him and smiled back. "Of course, that’s something I always like!" it said.

The mayor and the dragon planned for a couple of hours and everything was settled. The dragon would help to defend the village. Loud noises were heard near the village when the opponent’s troops were approaching.

The soldiers of Penmachno were ready behind the dragon. The troops of the neighbouring village were in front of the dragon. They became white as sheets when they saw the dragon and stiffened out of fear. They started back to their village screaming aloud.

Next day they came back in bigger troops. This time they didn’t flee. The dragon burned their equipment and ate the men, but not the people of Penmachno.

Now Penmachno was safe. In the evening the people had a celebration for the dragon. They had plenty of food, a lot of vegetables, as the dragon had decided to become a vegetarian. Even today the people in Penmachno celebrate the Dragon every year that same day, when the dragon saved the whole village. Well, some of them may have forgotten the story as it happened such a long time ago, but if you go to Penmachno you’ll still find there an empty quarry called Rhiw Bach Quarry.
