Machno arrives

It was mid-Summer, and it was dry and hot in Igualada. Even the river Anoia had dried up and all the people were waiting for it to rain but it just wouldn’t.

There was no water to give to the animals, and the grass was not growing.

Everyone was desperate for it to rain.

While this was going on, Machno the Dragon from Wales had been invited to visit Escola Mowgli and he was very pleased to be able to jump on an Easyjet plane from Liverpool to Barcelona. He was looking forward to a week of swimming and sunbathing on the Catalonian beaches. When he eventually arrived in Igualada, he decided to go to a Tapas bar for some food. His favourite food was raw fish which he could cook himself using the flames from his mouth! When he had finished eating, he decided to go for a walk around the town.

He came to the town square, and there, sitting on the steps of the town hall was a little girl.

There were tears streaming from the little girl’s eyes and Machno felt very sorry for her.

‘I’m Machno the Magic Dragon from Wales’ said Machno. ‘How can I help to make a little girl like you happy?’

Anna

‘I’m hot, I’m thirsty and I’m hungry’ said the little girl called Anna, ‘ and I have no money to buy anything’.

Machno could see that Anna was very poor, and after buying her some food and a drink Machno said that because he was a Magic Dragon,he could offer her three magic wishes.

A smile came to the Anna’s face and she said ‘I’ve always wanted to take part in the Tres Tombs. I would love to dress up in our National costume, and join the parade sitting on a beautiful carriage , throwing sweets to the children’ she said

Anna was so happy

Her wish was granted, and she was dressed in beautiful clothes and she rode in the grandest carriage you have ever seen.

It was so good to see her happy face as the parade of horses and carriages passed through the town three times.

She had never experienced anything like this before and all the people watching were waving and cheering as she went by.

This was a very happy day for Anna, and she would remember this for the rest of her life.

At the end of the day, Machno came to see her once again to enquire about her second wish. Anna felt very selfish, but decided that she would ask for another wish for herself.

‘Do you think you could arrange for me to be the little child that climbs to the top of the human castle’ she asked.

Machno looked at her kindly and said ‘That will be no trouble at all’When the crowd gathered in the square at Igualada for the Human Castle competition, Anna and her parents were there, and they were very excited. The record for the tallest castle was for ten groups standing on each other’s shoulders. Today, they were going to try and break that record..

I can see Montserrat
They started building the castle slowly and carefully with four strong men making the base. Ever so slowly, the castle grew – seven, eight, nine groups and eventually ten. They were now equal with the record. The tower was shaking like a jelly when the eleventh group climbed into place, and then it was Anna’s turn.

Let's Party

She climbed very slowly and very carefully without looking down at the ground. She passed the tenth group – something that had never been done before. She stumbled and almost fell but was able to regain her balance. Anna was right at the top and all she had to do now was to stand up and blow a kiss to everybody in the square. She had made it, and the crowd cheered wildly. The old record had been broken. What a party they had that night, and Anna was the centre of attraction. Machno and her parents watched proudly as the townspeople celebrated.
What a day it had been, and there was still one wish left. Would her wish be to help the Three Wise Men, or would she wish to play hockey for Igualada, the League Champions?

She thought about all the people of Igualada and how hard things had been for them. No food for the animals, no water to drink so she decided to use her last wish to ask for rain.

It rained and rained for a few days and the people danced in the streets. The river was full and everyone was happy. Machno was so proud of Anna because she had not used the last wish for herself.

As a reward, Machno used his magic powers to provide Anna and her family with a new house, and lots of land so that they could grow orange trees. They could sell these oranges to make sure that they were never poor again.

Casa Anna
Machno was Anna’s hero, and when it was time for him to leave Escola Mowgli, and return to Wales everyone was sorry to see him go. He had enjoyed his holiday in Catalonia, and while he was there he had learnt a new language and made many new friends. The children waved goodbye and Anna shouted

‘Thank you so much Machno’

As Machno stepped on the plane he turned round and shouted

‘Dim Problem Anna.’
