The Rose
The rose has always been the lovers’ symbol because of its red colour, which means passion … but also for its thorns, which symbolize all lovers’ sacrifices. In Saint George’s legend, the dragon’s blood turns into a red rose, the most beautiful of all flowers. During the XVI century a market of roses was opened in Barcelona. This market was called "the lovers market" and it was from then that giving a rose as a present, as a symbol of love became a tradition.

The Book
Back
In 1923, Vicent Clavell, from Barcelona suggested that a celebration of books be held. It was decided to celebrate it on the 23rd April, which is the anniversary of the death of the famous writer  Miguel de Cervantes and also the day our Catalan famous writer Josep Pla died. April 23rd is also UNESCO World Book Day.

The festivity was very successful just all over Catalonia but especially in Barcelona, and it has been held ever since. On Saint George’s day, the three main ingredients Saint George, the book, and the rose, are celebrated in all Catalan towns and villages.
